Of course, you all should know well the name Kerry Thornley, without whom this site would have never been imagined. Thornley, as well, was an influence, either large or small—depending on who you talk to—on another religion (or irreligion or spoof religion, as the case may), that being the Church of SubGenius, and it’s the church’s publishing arm—namely The SubGenius Foundation—which brings us the latest installment in the Thornley literary canon in a book called Jailbird: The Dreadlock Recollections that has been compiled by Trevor Blake aka Rev. Onan Canobite and contains what Trevor/Onan describes as “the first publication of the complete text, under the author’s preferred title, with related unpublished essays, annotations and index…” The book also includes an intro by Rev. Ivan Stang, who recounts—among other things—how Kerry photographed himself fucking a chair. 5 (Discordian) stars.
Secondly, we here at Gorightly Publications are pleased to announce the release of the long lost James Shelby Downard magnum opus, Stalking the Great Whore, which I first gave a heads-up about here at Historia Discordia a few years back in a post called When Downard Went Discordia.
And lastly, the sadness I spoke to earlier concerns Antero Alli’s latest, and what he advises us, is his last book: Last Words: Towards an Insurrection of the Poetic Imagination, which as the title states will provide a bookend to the many, many great works of film and literature Antero has produced over the last several decades.
Sad, yes, and at the same time this book is an inspiring, no-nonsense look at how we can make magic in our own individual lives, with the realization that we are all finite beings in an infinite universe of possibilities.
Here is the back cover blurb I provided for Last Words:
“There’s no escaping it; each of us in our time will confront loss in its many forms: loss of love, health, innocence, loss of life; such losses form a tapestry, each thread woven from the next ‘high’ or ‘low’ or ‘in between,’ all part of this mystery we’re passing through. And among the many losses we suffer, life can also be a joyous dance, a game we play, a palette from which to paint—if we choose to frame it that way. Antero Alli’s Last Words represent another loss, one where wisdom can be gained: that by acknowledging our losses head on, in some way we can become larger, deeper, fuller; there’s a silent grace that comes with such knowledge. And as we walk through the next door to whatever may await, with it comes the understanding that there’s little time left to look back at what is or was or what might have been It was all part of the journey that got us here, and what’s immediately in front of us is where we should be right now.” – Adam Gorightly

Hi Adam. These all look great! I just wanted to point out that somewhere between the photo and your text, Kerry’s book has transformed from Jailbird to Jailbait, which might well draw a wider audience but may not meet their expectations.
On page 207 in Stalking the Great Whore, several names were censored. Why was this done? Thanks.
The Illuminati made me do it.
Hi Adam – Gary here. Wanted to ask a question about Ian Blake and his letter from Downard! Is it possible to read a copy of that letter, or contact Ian? Fascinating to hear that Downard contacted people other than the usual names. I bought ‘Stalking’ – big book, must have took a lot of work. It would be interesting to know about any possible ‘pure’ Downard writings without input from the ’73 group – maybe there never was input but just listened to a podcast suggesting that. Thanks!
Hi Gary,
I had intended to publish a complete reproduction of Ian Blake’s letter in Stalking but was unable to make contact with him at the last address I had, which is the reason I just quoted from the letter. I’d be reluctant to publish a reproduction of it without Ian’s consent, but really you got the gist I think of the pertinent parts. Also, Downard made a bit of a racial slur in that letter that I didn’t necessarily wish to repeat.
As for Ian, I haven’t been in contact with him since the early to late 1990s when he had written for a few zines back at that time, including The Excluded Middle.
There was a period of time in that late 1980s/early 1990s period where Downard was accessible if you knew the right people who could put you in touch with him. I have also seen correspondence between Downard and Adam Parfrey (perhaps I can get permission to publish them at some point), so Downard was a willing correspondent…once again if you knew how to reach him…which wasn’t necessarily all that easy.
Hi Adam
Thanks for getting back, I know you’re very busy with books like you stated on the podcast, so thanks very much. I understand about the letter consent. I have one question maybe you can give me a hint at or more – so it looks like Mr Downard wrote the book(s) in the 70’s – I was wondering what he did after the books, in the 80’s and 90’s? Before I read ‘Stalking’ I was already confused about how could this man write so much stuff and then go silent? Then I read ‘Stalking’ and couldn’t beleive how much he had done, and then went silent. Now maybe I’m wrong, maybe he didn’t go silent at all and I just don’t know where to look, but I find it very curious as to why he wrote so much and then kind of appeared to stop? Hearing the little bit about the two brothers possibly stealing his manuscript even made me more curious. I find the man and his info fascinating. Thanks to you for your work. And I’ve mentioned this before so please be patient with me lol – I was told on very good authority that the Sirius Rising tapes go on for much longer than the version released in the last few years but for some reason the owner does not want them released in full – do you know of anyone who has heard the full version at all? Thanks again Adam very much.
Hi Gary,
The bulk of Downard’s writings were during the mid 1970s period, as far as I can tell. As to why his output dropped after that could have been attributed to any number of reasons, I guess, from poor eyesight that developed in his latter years, or perhaps occasional stays in psychiatric institutions, or maybe just getting flustered that his darn manuscripts kept disappearing on him…so why bother?
I think Robert Anton Wilson probably heard more than one of the Sirius Rising tapes. Or he mentioned as much in Cosmic Trigger. From what I have heard, though, Downard only appeared on one of these tapes.
Hi Adam
Thanks for getting back. Always wondered why his voice, of all voices, kind of went silent. ”his darn manuscripts kept disappearing on him” – this is a very curious matter. I feel there are certain guys out there who could fill us in a lot more on what exactly went on there – maybe we don’t deserve to be filled in I suppose, but still hella curious and interested. Thanks again Adam.
